Treatments
The Birmingham and Midland Memory Clinic is pleased to be able to offer treatment in the form of Cholinesterase Inhibitors for those with a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s Dementia. These drugs, namely Donepezil (Aricept), Rivastigmine (Exelon), Galantamine (Reminyl) are not always available on the NHS but may still be beneficial to some people. Current NICE (National Institute of Clinical Excellence) guidelines do not recommend their use for early dementia. We offer the opportunity for those with Alzheimer’s Dementia to receive a trial of this medication. The response to medication would be monitored through the clinic. In addition to the above treatments the Birmingham and Midland Memory Clinic is able to offer you practical advice in the form of an occupational therapy assessment. Occupational therapy is different because it looks at how your memory affects your day to day living in a practical way. An Occupational Therapist will help you to identify the areas of your lifestyle that are most affected by your memory in order to maximise and maintain your independence. The consultants at the Birmingham and Midland Memory Clinic can refer you to an Occupational Therapist who specialises in this area. |
